ROYAL PRIESTHOOD

1 Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light;

We are priests.  We are called to stand in the gap between man and God. We are in charge, even in our family.  God first chose the Levites, with Aaron being the high priest and his children after him (Deut 10:8, Ex 29:9).  Jesus is now the High Priest (Heb 4:14-16), and we are priests under Him.

Jesus is also the King of kings (Rev 17:14).  In the Old Testament the king and priest were not the same person.  When King Saul offered sacrifices because the priest was late he lost his kingdom (1Sam 13:8-14).  When Uzziah touched holy things he died (2Sam 6:6-8). However, David was able to eat the consecrated bread (Matt 12:3-4), revealing a different priesthood in the future.

The royal priesthood is through the order of Melchizedek (Heb 7:1-3). This is Jesus order, and our order. Here the two anointings are combined (Zech 6:12-13).  We are called to reign, to shine like lights (Rom 5:17).  But always remember we cannot do anything without Jesus (Rom 8:32).  Everything changed when Jesus was resurrected (Rom 4:24-25).  We now always have light, because Jesus is in us (Rev 1:13, 1Cor 6:19, 1Pet 2:9-10), unlike in the Old Testament when the priests had to constantly light the candles.  We are justified – we have been completely cleared of any wrong doing! (1Pet 2:24, Heb 8:12).

You are a royal priest.  Stand in the gap in these perilous times (2Tim 3:1-5, Jam 5:16).  Jesus is calling us to reign on earth as He is reigning in heaven as the Lion and the Lamb (Rev 5:10, 1:5-6).  We are to occupy until He returns by serving the Lord and serving the people.

We are a peculiar people – our dual anointing was impossible in the Old Testament.  Along with Christ we also receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing (Rev 5:12).
