Luke 9:2 And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.
Jesus gave the instruction to preach the Gospel and heal the sick many times revealing this is an important instruction for us to obey (Luk 9:1-2, Matt 10:7-8, Luk 10:1, 9, Mk 16:15-18). First the disciples were observers and hearers – just as we are being discipled and trained for a mission – then we must go and put it into practice (1Tim 4:8, Heb 5:13-14).
Jesus sent out those who were trained (Luk 9:1-2). His instruction to go was not to the crowds, but to the disciples. Jesus gave them power (dunamis) and authority (exousia) to drive out demons, cure diseases, heal the sick and preach the Kingdom of God. We have received the Holy Spirit and been given power and authority too (Act 1:8). We authenticate the message we have preached by demonstration of power. The disciples immediately obeyed the great commission when Jesus left them and miraculous signs followed (Mk 16:19-20). Jesus has promised that we will do greater works because He is with the Father (Jn 14:12-14).
Christ knew His purpose in coming to earth (Is 61:1-3). He confirmed this by reading that scripture in the temple (Lk 4:17-21). Jesus wants us to be trees of righteousness glorifying Him where ever He plants us. He wants us to share the Good News. Our own testimony is a good place to start.
When Jesus first sent the disciples out He told them not to take anything (Lk 9:3). This was part of their training to see if they really trusted God to provide everything they needed (Matt 6:26,30-33). We need to follow instructions and learn to be content whatever our circumstances (Lk 22:35-36, 2 Tim 2:3-4, Phil 4:11-13).
The RVC theme this year is The King is Coming. Preach the Gospel, Heal the Sick. We have been learning, watching and listening, now it is time to move from our comfort zone. The disciples came back with good reports when they obeyed Jesus instructions (Lk 9:6, Mk 6:12-13). Who will you share the Good News with this week?
